Most journeys through western Libya begin and end in Tripoli. The old walled medina holds markets, mosques and the second-century Arch of Marcus Aurelius - our own office stands beside it. Just outside the walls lies the Italian quarter, built in the early twentieth century. The old city is best visited Sunday to Thursday, when local businesses are open.
